Beauty For All Bodies: My Journey As a Portrait & Headshot Photographer
Hey folks, Travis Curry here – I wanted to share some insight with you on what Beauty For All Bodies means to me. You may have seen me use it in hashtags and captions over the years. Looking at my recently updated website, you’ll notice that the phrase Beauty For All Bodies is woven throughout it. Let's dive into the real talk behind my journey as a professional photographer, in photographing beauty portraits and headshots in NYC and breaking free from the cookie-cutter beauty norms that sometimes overshadow the essence of true beauty.
Discovering the True Beauty Within
Back in 2018, I embarked on a project close to my heart, I named it "I Embrace Me." It wasn't just about creating images; it was a mission to redefine beauty. Fed up with the industry's obsession with sample-size models, I wanted to show off the beauty in every shape and size. At the time, I saw so many influencers recreating campaign with Plus Size Bodies, (I even modeled in one featured on Teen Vogue). However, I wasn’t seeing a lot of original shoots featuring Plus Size and visibily fat bodies. I teamed up with Model & Activist, Ady Del Valle to bring together a group of people with a diverse range of backgrounds and sizes. I photographed this beautiful group of people that inspired me to continue this work. Some of the participants were models, but many were people who just wanted to feel seen. Out of that project came the mantra, "Beauty For All Bodies" (#beautyforallbodies), a movement that's more than just a catchy phrase—it's a vibe that resonates with those the fashion world often overlooks.
Beyond the Expected: My Dive into Real Portraiture
While I've spent the last 15 years photographing the vibrant scenes of life, my roots aren't just firmly planted in the world of fashion and beauty. I might have dabbled in the glitz and glam of NYC's fashion scene since 2015, but at my core, I'm a photographer of people. I've continued to capture headshots and portraits throughout my journey, and today, "Beauty For All Bodies" is all about emphasizing real stories and giving an opportunity for people to be seen!
