6 Tips for Capturing Extended Family Photos During the Holidays
The holidays are one of the rare times when families come together from far and wide, making it the perfect opportunity to capture memories with an extended family photo. Whether you're gathering for the first time in years or keeping up with an annual tradition, here are some tips to help you create beautiful, lasting images during your holiday celebrations.
I’ll admit—as a photographer, I often forget to do this with my own family. Sometimes I’ll bring my camera along, but I want to spend my time catching up and enjoying the moment rather than “working.” The last time I took a full extended family photo was Christmas 2015 with my Dad’s side of the family, and those photos remain so special to us.
That Christmas was celebrated at my aunt’s home, with her big yard framed by these beautiful evergreens. Cue me focusing my lens, lining up the group, and capturing one of the most meaningful photos I’ve ever taken. What makes this photo so special to me is that it shows my Aunt Yvonne—who recently passed—looking so happy and radiant.
When I look at that photo now, I remember how much fun we had that Christmas. As one of the older cousins, it was a joy to spend time with my younger cousins and see them growing into young adults. The photo isn’t perfect, but it’s real. Yes, that’s my Mom and Aunt Rene with their wine glasses in hand—and I wouldn’t change a thing.
1. It’s a Great Time to Get Everyone Together
Let’s face it—coordinating schedules for a large family can be tricky any time of year. The holidays are a natural moment when most of your loved ones are already in one place, so take advantage! These photos aren’t just about the picture itself—they’re about celebrating the connections that make your family unique.

2. Find a Space with Nice Lighting and Enough Room
A well-lit space with ample room is key to a great family photo. Natural light works best, so aim to position everyone near large windows or outdoors during daylight hours. If you’re taking the photos yourself, use a tripod and your camera’s timer or a remote control to make sure everyone is included.
3. Check the Weather and Sunset Times
If you’re planning an outdoor shoot, weather and timing are everything. Golden hour—about an hour before sunset—is ideal for soft, flattering light. Check your local sunset time and plan your session accordingly for the best results.
4. Coordinate Outfits (Without Overdoing It)
Encourage each family within the group to dress their best, but don’t stress about matching everyone perfectly. Instead, opt for complementary colors or seasonal tones that add to the festive feel. A little coordination can make the photo look polished without feeling overly planned.
5. Keep It Timeless
While holiday-themed props or outfits can be fun, they might not age well over time. Consider focusing on a seasonal vibe instead—think cozy sweaters, neutral tones, or rich colors that evoke the time of year without being tied to a specific holiday. This ensures your photos feel timeless and versatile.
6. Hire a Professional Photographer
If you want stress-free, high-quality photos, consider bringing in a professional photographer. They can handle the logistics, ensure everyone looks their best, and capture a variety of groupings, including individual family units. Keep in mind that because of the busy holiday season, photography rates may be higher during this time—book early to secure your spot and avoid last-minute stress.

Bonus Tip: Make It Fun!
The best photos are the ones that capture genuine smiles and laughter. Keep the atmosphere light, and don’t be afraid to embrace candid moments. Whether it’s the grandparents sharing a joke or the little ones being playful, those unscripted moments often become the most cherished memories.
With a little planning, your extended family photos can become a meaningful tradition that everyone looks forward to year after year. Ready to capture your family this holiday season? Reach out to book your session today!
