6 Tips for Capturing Extended Family Photos During the Holidays

The holidays are one of the rare times when families come together from far and wide, making it the perfect opportunity to capture memories with an extended family photo. I’ll admit—as a photographer, I often forget to do this with my own family. Sometimes I’ll bring my camera along, but I want to spend my time catching up and enjoying the moment rather than “working.” The last time I took a full extended family photo was Christmas 2015 with my Dad’s side of the family, and those photos remain so special to us.

That Christmas was celebrated at my aunt’s home, with her big yard framed by these beautiful evergreens. Cue me focusing my lens, lining up the group, and capturing one of the most meaningful photos I’ve ever taken. What makes this photo so special to me is that it shows my Aunt Yvonne—who recently passed—looking so happy and radiant.

When I look at that photo now, I remember how much fun we had that Christmas. As one of the older cousins, it was a joy to spend time with my younger cousins and see them growing into young adults. The photo isn’t perfect, but it’s real. Yes, that’s my Mom and Aunt Rene with their wine glasses in hand—and I wouldn’t change a thing.

If you’re planning an outdoor shoot, weather and timing are everything. Golden hour—about an hour before sunset—is ideal for soft, flattering light. Check your local sunset time and plan your session accordingly for the best results.
