Corporate Headshots – LRS Federal

Last month I had the pleasure of photographing brand new corporate headshots for my client LRS Federal. In the late summer of 2015 I photographed their CEO for a feature in Smart CEO Magazine. It was great to finally meet Robyn, who was coordinating with me for the Smart CEO shoot. When I’m hired for business/corporate photoshoots, I’m often not communicating with the subject of my shoot, however it’s always a treat when I get to meet and photograph the person I’ve been coordinating with! LRS is located in Maryland, so it was a great excuse for me to get out of NYC for a couple days and head back to my old stomping grounds in MD!

Photographing Corporate Headshots

A lot of my clients want fresh, clean headshots that are bright and happy. A high-key, white background is pretty standard for a lot of corporate headshots. LRS Federal’s previous headshots included an American flag background. The great thing about shooting on an all-white background is that if needed, my client could change the background to something to fit the design aesthetic of their website or other marketing materials.

Creating a Personal Connection

For a lot of large companies, corporate headshots are often like school picture day. I really don’t like this mentality, because I like to give every person I photograph my time and the ability to capture their personality. I remember hating school picture day and thinking those photographers were so awkward and creepy. I don’t want people to think that about me! Even when I’ve been hired to shoot 80+ people, I make sure to schedule everyone’s session so it’s not such a revolving door. I think that creating a strong business headshot isn’t something that can be done in just a few quick snaps, it takes time and coaching. Since LRS is a smaller company, we were able to take our time and make sure everyone was comfortable in front of the camera and happy with the photos we were capturing.

Alternative Business Headshots

Before the shoot, I decided that I wanted to create 2 separate lighting looks. First I knew that my client definitely wanted a white background, so that was the main priority of the shoot. After we got everyone’s high key shots, I switched up my lighting just a bit to include a grey backdrop. This was a quick change, but turned out to be a valuable choice for my client. I would be able to make this change if I was shooting at a higher volume as well, so this is a solid lighting choice for me. Now they each have 2 separate headshots they can use and switch out based on what they need. LRS may use the high key shots for their website, but may want to use the secondary shots for press photos, social media or other marketing collateral. I always want to provide my clients with photo options!
